Work force is defined as those who work in the area represented, but may live elsewhere. A total of 236,311 individuals are employed in Madison and St. Clair counties with 153,841 of these in the private sector. As in recent years, the Trade/Transportation/Utilities sector in 2010 accounted for more than one quarter of the total number of jobs in Southwestern Illinois, while Education and Health Services was the next largest sector with 19.2 percent of the jobs.  Manufacturing remained stable at 10.5 percent, while construction jobs increased slightly to 6.3 percent in 2010 after experiencing a significan drop the prior year. This increase is due, in part, to continuing investments at Scott Air Force Base and ConocoPhillips.
