
Southwestern Illinois Demographics
Madison and St. Clair counties remain the second most populous region in the State of Illinois with a combined population of 539,338. Median household income continues to rise for area residents, growing from $40,345 in 2000 to an estimated $45,593 in 2005 and $48,498 in 2010. Per capita income also is on the rise, up from $19,721 in 2000 to $25,095 today. Southwestern Illinois has also seen a significant increase in educational attainment in the last 10 years. The percentage of individuals earning a high school diploma or higher has risen to 87.6 percent, and the percentage earning a bachelor's degree or higher is almost 23 percent for 2010.
